Riding On Hope

Riding On Hope

An elderly Haitian man lies in pain on a cot in a dark, wooden shack with no electricity or running water in a rural area near the Haiti-Dominican Republic border. The 100-pound earthquake survivor, Jean, is unable to walk — a virtual prisoner in the shack. As he is peeled from the sheets, he moans quietly. He is placed in his new wheelchair and taken outside. He looks to the sky, lets out a gasp and fills his lungs with fresh air. I’m the Daily Toreador photo editor. Last [...]

Hale students raise money for Haiti

Hale students raise money for Haiti. After the earthquake in Haiti, Hale Elementary students raided their piggybanks, collecting about $3,000, but that pool now has grown to a total of nearly $50,000. Parent Diana Anderson told others about the students' fundraiser, which inspired them to donate money and materials. A matching grant of about $24,000 from the Wheelchair Foundation means more than 300 wheelchairs will go to the disabled in Haiti. If you would like to donate, the foundation will [...]

Haitian wreckage touches charity veteran

Haitian wreckage touches charity veteran

Jeff Behring is no stranger to need. He's traveled to impoverished areas all over the world making deliveries with his family's Wheelchair Foundation. When he returned to Port-au-Prince recently he was dismayed by the devastation. "I have never, ever seen anything like it," said Behring about the devastation in the capital. "It's hard to believe anybody could have gotten out of those buildings alive. I don't know how they will do the cleanup - there are tons and tons of [...]

Horrors of the Haiti Earthquake and the Power of Human Understanding

Yesterday I received this moving account from Los Angeles psychotherapist, Dr. Nancy Sobel, describing her experiences volunteering on a medical team in Haiti. It illustrates the incomparable power of human understanding in times of devastating collective trauma: "As I watched the compelling coverage of the earthquake on Anderson Cooper, there was one scene that captivated me more than the rest. It took place at an orphanage that had been destroyed and about thirty babies were lined up on [...]
