Riding On Hope
An elderly Haitian man lies in pain on a cot in a dark, wooden shack with no electricity or running water in a rural area near the Haiti-Dominican Republic border. The 100-pound earthquake survivor, Jean, is unable to walk — a virtual prisoner in the shack. As he is peeled from the sheets, he moans quietly. He is placed in his new wheelchair and taken outside. He looks to the sky, lets out a gasp and fills his lungs with fresh air. I’m the Daily Toreador photo editor. Last [...]

Hale students raise money for Haiti
Hale students raise money for Haiti. After the earthquake in Haiti, Hale Elementary students raided their piggybanks, collecting about $3,000, but that pool now has grown to a total of nearly $50,000. Parent Diana Anderson told others about the students' fundraiser, which inspired them to donate money and materials. A matching grant of about $24,000 from the Wheelchair Foundation means more than 300 wheelchairs will go to the disabled in Haiti. If you would like to donate, the foundation will [...]
Wheelchairs for Haiti
Our District has a long and proud history as a strong supporter of the Wheelchair Foundation since its inception in the year 2000. The tragic earthquake in Haiti has created an enormous need for wheelchairs in that country for the many survivors who have now become amputees, or have suffered injuries which has taken away their mobility. Walnut Creek native Komsky readies for his first solo opera concert
George Komsky remembers how determined he was during his first couple of years in college to practice singing opera. Unable to do so at his university dorm, Komsky drove to a campus parking garage at 1 a.m., put on an opera CD, sat on a chair by his car door and — not to be deterred by occasional passers-by who were yelling at him to keep quiet — Komsky sang his heart out. "That was really the only way I could practice, freshman and sophomore year," he said. "I was singing in a garage [...]

Countless Lost Limbs Alter Life in Haiti’s Ruins
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — “Don’t cut off my leg!” Fabienne Jean screamed repeatedly as she was carried through the gates of the General Hospital here after the earthquake. “I’m a dancer. My leg is my livelihood. Please, don’t take my leg.” “It is a sad story,” Ms. Jean, 31, a slim, graceful woman who danced for the Haitian National Theater, said recently, massaging her bandaged stump. “But what can I do? I can’t kill myself because of this, so I have to learn to live [...]
